I cannot believe my first born is two already, actually what I cannot believe is that I have not created a blog post since he was born! Thats right, the last blog post I made was about his birth announcement. While my blog / site did take a back seat for two years, I’m excited to jump back in and what a better way to start than with a birthday party!
Sebastian’s favorite thing right now is Airplanes! I think it’s actually things that fly … helicopters, rockets, etc. but we went with airplanes for this theme and he loved it. I’m not going to lie, I would have rather it been rockets, because then I could have expanded upon that with a whole space theme. My husband was right though, he likes planes better so we went with that.
It was a little limiting since we could really just do airplanes and clouds … he likes airplanes, not flying, so I didn’t do the whole “flying experience”. Here is how it turned out!
I kept the invitation pretty simple, we didn’t have any special requests or information needed so date, time and place was good to go. This invitation can be found in both digital and printed options here.
When it came to decorations I pulled the colors from the invitation and made a banner, balloon garland clouds with hanging planes, straw details, confetti and a “cakescape”.
“Cakescape” is a term I coined for the above. Basically is a scene created on top of the cake using the same idea as cupcake toppers. This was my first one and honestly it’s too big. A few more tries and I think I’ll have it down pat. I also have no idea if someone else already uses this name … I’ll have to look it up.
This was my first time making a balloon garland. I was actually using it as a guinea pig for another upcoming party. I wanted to see how long the balloons would last and how easy it was to use the balloon garland tape I was trying. It made it super simple and I will use it again. You can find it here.
The favor for his party was a “dookie” … read it as if it rhymes with cookie, not another word for poop ha-ha. Sebastian pronounces it “dookie” right now so thats what we called it. They are basic sugar cookies and royal frosting in the shape of planes and clouds. See how they turned out here.
I have been testing out a few different types of confetti for the Etsy Shop so I thought … why not make some for this party to continue my testing. I went with two different color airplanes and clouds … of course. I used them on tables and around the cake. Heard some great feedback and when I cleaned it up, it was still in perfect condition so I can use it again.
One tradition I started with his first birthday was to have a book that everyone could sign that went with the theme. Sebastian loves books and this results in a nice keepsake for him. I will most likely only do it for his first five birthdays (we will see) and my hopes is that there will be Dr. Seuess book for the next three themes, as the first two books were.
One fun little touch that was actually my favorite thing, was the little propellers that I added to the straws. It was quick, simple and was something that wasn’t just an airplane or a cloud.
Across the mantel I took the four main colors from the invitation and created a plane / cloud garland. It was a nice pop of color and Sebastian actually saved all the airplanes and plays with them. Gotta love double uses for things like this.
I ordered these little foam planes here, they were the planes that hung from the cloud garland and I also placed them all around the house for the kids to play with during the party. They were a bit hit and I now have a big bag of them to pull out on a rainy day – again with the double uses, makes the party decor worth it.
I’m quite lucky because my husband LOVES to cook and every time we entertain he always takes the reins in the food department. Otherwise, I’d be ordering pizza 🙂 He kept it (somewhat) simple with Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Mac & Cheese (homemade – hence the somewhat), French Fries (a request from Sebastian), Watermelon and Chips (or as Sebastian calls them … Bips).
Overall the party was a success! Sebastian had a great time, our families got together, we had some new friends over and everyone loved the airplanes.
